In response to recent actions by the United States, China has raised tariffs on American goods to 84%. The announcement was made by the Commission on Customs Tariffs under the State Council of the People’s Republic of China.
The new tariff rate on imports from the United States will increase from 34% to 84%, effective starting April 10.
The statement from the Commission emphasized that the US's escalation of tariffs against China is a series of mistakes that severely infringe upon China’s legitimate rights and interests, while also undermining the multilateral trading system based on rules.
Additionally, China’s Ministry of Commerce confirmed that the country is filing a complaint with the World Trade Organization in response to the latest tariff hike by the United States.
Earlier, the US had raised tariffs on imports from China from 54% to 104%. This increase will be implemented beginning April 9.
Previously, the US had imposed a 54% tariff on Chinese goods, which included a 20% preliminary tariff and a 34% tariff that was part of a broader set of retaliatory measures against several countries. After former President Trump threatened to introduce an additional 50% tariff, China vowed to “fight to the end” and take counteractions to protect its interests.
On April 2, Donald Trump announced the imposition of large-scale tariffs on trading partners. Starting April 5, a 10% basic tariff was introduced on imports from all countries. Additionally, as of April 9, higher reciprocal tariffs will be applied to countries with which the US has the largest trade deficits.
